Early this morning there was a multi-vehicle crash on Anderson Hill Road involving a multi-ton gasoline truck carrying an estimated 8,500 gallons of gasoline. Authorities claim that there were five people injured, one of which is considered to be serious.
The severely injured citizen was airlifted by helicopter to the morristown hospital where they are receiving treatment.
The crash reportedly took place at around 8:20 this morning after the gasoline truck flipped over on its own, crashing into two more cars.
The crash took place just outside of Bernardsville Middle School and Bedwell Elementary school resulting in the two schools being put on shutdown, not allowing anyone out to keep the students and faculty safe. The surrounding houses, however, were evacuated. The School of St. Elizabeth had to be evacuated as well.
Bernards High School students received news of the crash early this morning during the second block. Many students noticed the helicopters flying over the school on the way to the site of the crash.
Tanner Pagel ‘26 was one of many students who noticed the helicopters flying over the school on the way to the wreck. Pagel recalled seeing the helicopters from his Latin classroom saying “[he] was confused at first, and the whole class began to speculate”. Within moments students began to learn what had truly happened.
Students slowly began to gain knowledge of the events that had taken place whether it be from teachers or fellow students relaying the information they had obtained. Initially, many students believed that the helicopters were secret service.
A sense of concern for the safety of the individuals involved in the crash. Jack Martin ‘27 learned about the events early on, describing his initial reaction as “shocked” expressing his “concern for people’s safety”. Martin explained that the first thing he did when he found out the news was “reach out to family and make sure everyone was ok.”
For now, authorities are asking everyone to stay away from the area of the crash until they can learn more and get it under control.
