Girls Tennis:
The girls tennis team is starting their season off strong. The varsity team currently has a record of 6 wins and 3 losses, and all members of the team are contributing. The players are winning their matches the majority of the time. “We have been successful so far, and are on a five match win streak” says junior Katarina Perisic. Last year’s team ended the season with a record of 14 wins and 3 losses, and made it to the last round of the NJSIAA (New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association) tournament, and qualified for the group tournament. This year the team looks just as strong and is hoping to put up another great performance as the season continues. “We are excited and optimistic,” Katarina says. The team is looking to continue to their matches and make it even further in counties, and is hoping to make it as far as they did last year.
Boys Soccer:
The Boys soccer team is 6-2, just coming off an overtime win over Delaware Valley. Junior Jaycob Marquez scored the overtime game winner, assisted by junior Tim Koke. The team has a strong roster this year, and expects to be just as good as years prior. Marquez states “So far we have been doing a lot better than expected, and as states approach we feel we can do just as good as last year”. They have an opportunity to clinch a divisional title, being 5-1 in the Skyland conference.Wins against teams like Montgomery, Watchung Hills, and North Hunterdon all contributes to them winning a title this year. With counties starting soon, the team is confident in their ability to succeed throughout the rest of the season.
Football:
The Football team has had an exceptional season so far, with a record of 6-0 and a divisional title early in the season. This is the football team’s 5th consecutive win of the big central conference patriot gold division. They beat their rivals, Delaware Valley, in a close 7-0 game. To wrap up the division, they beat Voorhees High School with a score of 33-13, clinching the division. Coach Sim reflects, “What has worked so well for us so far is our energy, and the team does a great job of running to the ball defensively”. With 4 more games left before states, the team still has a long road ahead of them, and seniors Jack Morra and Grayson Meyer believe “[They] have to keep working hard and continue improving for playoffs”. The football team has a bright future this year, and are excited to put the work in to clinch home state games on behalf of the seniors.
Girls Volleyball:
The girls volleyball team has been improving rapidly, with this season being just the second season since bringing it to Bernards High. Senior Lauren Bury says, “The season has been pretty good so far, we have had one very tough week but we are working through and on a winning streak.” They are currently 4-3 so far, after defeating a few good teams. Bury says, “I see us hopefully qualifying for states.” The girls are keeping an open mind as they defeat more and more teams and head into more rounds of the state competitions. The first round of states starts soon, with the next rounds in the weeks following that. The girls are hoping to keep up the success and win their state games.
Girls Soccer:
The girls soccer team has true potential this year. With most of the roster being returning 4-year starters, they are senior heavy and eager to win a championship. So far, they are 8-2 against solid competition and only have one loss so far in their division. They have won a divisional title for the past 3 years, and are on road to win their fourth in the upcoming weeks. They have a strong defense, with Ella Damratoski being a brick wall in net and Charlotte Burlingame and Alexa Paterno denying teams chances to score. The offensive line has put up 40 goals in just 10 games, crushing teams offensively. Junior Jane Stauffer quotes “I feel we are all focused on getting a ring this season, and everyone has bought in with their time and effort to achieve this”. The team has worked hard this season, but they still have plenty of time left to go until states begin. The girls are eager to see their success play out in states coming up at the end of the month.
Field Hockey:
The field hockey team is starting their season with some great wins. Although their record is currently 2-5-1, the team has already defeated a few surprising teams and tied with Philipsburg, despite the fact that the girls were clearly the underdogs. The girls and coaches are extremely optimistic as they head into their next rounds of the SCIAA tournament, despite losing their first round. Varsity head coach Falzarano says, “we are also very young. We have a lot of young talent.” The team is still working on securing the wins, but it is still at the start of its season, but as Falzarano says, “we will have quite a bit of time to get our power points up.” The team has shown they have what it takes to win more and more games, and that is just what they hope to do as the season progresses.
Cross Country:
The boys and girls cross country teams are currently at a record of 6-0 and 4-2. Considering the boys team is undefeated and the girls team only has 2 losses, the cross country program is starting their season off well. Head coach Szostak says, “Our boys are currently ranked in the top 20 in the state and our girls are one of the top 10 teams in Group 2.” Clearly, the teams are having success so far. As the team continues to place highly in their meets, the championship meets are getting closer. Szostak says that their strategy is, “all about improving and peaking at the end of the season”, and hopes to do just as well as last year’s team, winning multiple championships. The team as a whole is hoping to continue their successes and win their meets and even championships.
