As election day 2024 comes to an end, the highly anticipated race between Vice President Kamala Harris and Former President Donald Trump has finished. On Tuesday November 5th, polls closed in all 50 states following many months of intense campaigning from both sides of the ballot. Most of the electoral college votes have been cast with 224 votes for Harris and 292 votes for Trump.
Alaska, Arizona, Nevada and Maine have yet to officially announce the winner of their electoral college votes. Former President Trump is currently leading in Alaska, Arizona and Nevada. Maine is the only state that has yet to announce a winner in which Harris is currently ahead.
Avery Calulo ‘26 said he “was up all night watching most of it.” Calulo said he was “surprised” by the results of many swing states such as Pennsylvania.
Although the Electoral College numbers are evident of a big win for Donald Trump, the popular vote tells a different story. Donald Trump has received over 71,000,000 votes as of now, just under 5,000,000 votes more than Vice President Harris, who has over 67,000,000.
“The election wasn’t as close, I thought it would be closer,” said Elizabeth Chen ‘26.
In both the previous two elections, Former President Donald Trump lost the popular vote, but this election yielded different results.
Following the official announcement of the election results, Vice President Harris rescheduled her speech, planning to speak to the nation the following day, November 6th. Meanwhile, the celebrations began for the Republican watch party in West Palm Beach, Florida as Former President Trump gave his celebratory speech following the results.
However, it was not all celebrations at Bernards High School, as many students expressed their concerns over the results. Julia Schmidt ‘26 said, “I am extremely discouraged with our country’s choice”. Despite being unable to vote in this year’s election, Schmidt said, “it still had a very big impact on me.”
While there are still states processing votes, the election is all but sealed for Former President Donald Trump, as he has already obtained the 270 electoral college votes required to win the presidency.
