In late September 2024, Hurricane Helene made landfall on the western coast of Florida, impacting Georgia, North and South Carolina, and Tennessee. Just nine days into October, another hurricane, Milton, swept across the Florida peninsula, leaving a trail of devastation that affected thousands of homes and lives.

Both hurricanes reached categories 4 and 5, resulting in billions of dollars in damage. Hurricane Helene alone caused an estimated $250 million in losses throughout the southeastern United States, while the destruction from Hurricane Milton accounted for an additional $50 billion in damages within a few weeks. Tragically, Vox reported that these storms claimed a total of 230 lives.

Recently, several articles highlighted initiatives to support Florida in the aftermath of the hurricanes, with one story particularly resonating: a local business in Basking Ridge is stepping up to make a difference. Rich DiLorenzo, the owner of Somerset Hills Exxon located at 545 Martinsville Rd, shared his commitment to helping those affected.

DiLorenzo has been deeply moved by the devastation caused by the hurricanes, which have destroyed homes and claimed countless lives.

He expressed feelings of helplessness, stating,  “You just feel so powerless watching these poor people endure such loss. I wish I could drive down there to help rebuild or deliver water, but I realized that I could inspire others to contribute financially.”

He pledged to donate 5 cents from every gallon of gas sold to assist those impacted in Florida.

DiLorenzo said, “We experienced our three busiest days of the month, and I decided to take proactive control of the donations. I’m excited to announce that we will be able to contribute a total of $2,500 to St. James Church this weekend, which is organizing a dedicated collection for hurricane relief.”

DiLorenzo’s initiative exemplifies how community support and local businesses can make a significant impact during challenging times, highlighting the strength of mutual support.

Goya Foods is a New Jersey-owned food chain providing massive help to Florida, North Carolina, and Georgia. By collaborating with Sweetwater Mission Food Bank and Lara Trump, they have been able to supply individuals and communities whose lives have been altered by natural disasters. This company is known for its involvement in many community issues, especially Latino Empowerment. Their hashtag #GOYACARES has over 1000 posts from all around the country.

The Pluckemin Presbyterian Church has organized several water drives as a way to help fundraise and donate to those in need. Pastor Ian Rankin says, “When the Hurricane first hit, I reached out to my friend who is a pastor and whose family was deeply affected because they lived in the area. They had lost power and the internet in their church, which is the First Presbyterian Church of Asheville, North Carolina.”

Rankin explains how water was the most immediate resource they needed. “Their area had been flooded and their main water supply had been ranked. They had no clean water at all, so that was the first thing they needed.”

The donations of local churches such as the New Providence Presbyterian Church, Liberty Corner Church, and Asian Indian Christian Church as well as the donations of individuals, all contributed to Pluckemin raising over $5,000. The companies Coca-Cola and Costco granted discounts on their products and therefore, with this amount of money, they obtained 6 pallets of water and 1200 bottles of water to donate, which are currently being shipped to North Carolina.

Rankin describes the motivation behind these incredible acts of kindness as being “called by God to be a hub of caring in the community to show the love of Jesus.” Plukemin believes that their community is not only the people around them but also whoever they can serve.

The devastation caused by Hurricanes Helene and Milton serves as a stark reminder of nature’s power and the fragility of our lives. With billions of dollars in damages and the tragic loss of 250 lives, the impact of these storms extends far beyond the areas directly affected.

In the face of such overwhelming destruction, it’s uplifting to see communities come together to support those in need. We extend our gratitude to Rich DiLorenzo, Goya Foods, Pluckemin Presbyterian Church, and others who have taken steps to aid recovery. Their efforts represent the beginning of our collective responsibility. Whether through financial contributions, organizing local drives, or volunteering time, every action can make a difference. Now is the time for us to step up, spread the word, and encourage greater community involvement. Together, we can help rebuild lives, restore hope, and demonstrate that in times of crisis, solidarity and compassion truly matter. Let’s commit to supporting those in Florida and the Southeastern U.S. not just in the immediate aftermath, but for as long as it takes to heal and recover.
