Girls Basketball starts season remarkably well

The Girl’s Basketball Team is 8-2 so far this season. On December 17th, the girls had their opening game against Verona. This was their biggest win and “redemption game” since Verona beat them in the first round of states last year.

On December 28th, the girls won the Metuchen Holiday Tournament for the second year in a row with Aletha Reynolds ‘26 being the MVP. Reynolds with nineteen points per game and Jasmine Kelleher ‘27 with eight points these two are the highest average scorers on the team this year. The starters consist of two seniors, one junior, and two sophomores. The Girl’s Basketball Team had their first division win against Bound Brook on December 19th. This game came down to the last two minutes with a final score of 42-38. Kelleher who had four steals and Alexa Paterno ‘25 had three steals helping them with the game. Kelleher shares, “The steals can shift the momentum of a game” and, with the team chemistry this year, everyone is really “supportive and understanding of their roles needed for the team to succeed” she explains.

This team is a senior-heavy group with most of the girls having multiple years of varsity experience prior to this season. Though the team consists of sophomores to seniors, they have great chemistry which Coach Bisconti attributes their success to. They have a ton of high-level game experience both on the basketball court and in the other sports they play – they know what it means to compete at a high level. Another strong aspect of the team’s success is their competitive approach to everything they do. Whether it’s in practice or in games, these girls compete every day. Coach Bisconti teaches them X’s and O’s and different game strategies, but competing at a high level is something that has to come from within — this group has that.

Over the years, the team has prioritized defense as their main focus. Bisconti expresses, “As long as they’re giving it their all on defense for me, I’m willing to let them be creative and look past minor mistakes on offense.”

The team has an array of talent such as Aletha Reynolds who has reached a record of five hundred rebounds this year and one hundred three pointers. Though it was not her goal until the end of freshman year she says “It was amazing to achieve it.” With hopes of the team advancing to states and possibly having a home state game, Reynolds also wants “to be close to or reach one thousand points this year.”

These girls show up and work hard every day in practice and are willing to sacrifice their own individual stats and put the team first. This team has the ability to do something special this season, “we just have to continue to stay committed to getting better every day and, if we do, we’ll be right where I believe we can be at the end,” Coach Bisconti shares.
