Following the success of the first two installments, Paramount Pictures is releasing a third Sonic The Hedgehog movie on December 20th, 2024. This time, featuring the most CGI characters so far. Sonic (Ben Shwartz), Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessey), and Knuckles (Idris Elba) return to the big screen in order to fight their greatest foe yet; Shadow the Hedgehog (Keanu Reeves). Fans may recognize this character from his appearances in video games such as Sonic Adventure 2 (2001) and Shadow the Hedgehog (2005), both being primary inspirations for the upcoming film.
Through events that will be explained later in the film, an enraged Shadow appears on Earth and starts wreaking havoc. Sonic, Tails and Knuckles are separated in the beginning of the movie, but come together in order to fight off this powerful threat. With speed that rivals even Sonic’s, and the otherworldly ability to teleport, Shadow outmatches our heroes in every conceivable way. Desperate to save his newfound home planet from total annihilation, Sonic seeks an alliance with his arch nemesis from the previous two movies, Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey).
Cinephiles can expect Sonic The Hedgehog 3 to be a grand completion of the trilogy. Prior to this movie’s creation, actor Jim Carrey claimed in an interview with Access Hollywood: “I am retiring from acting following my role as Doctor Robotnik in the Sonic sequel.” Despite this claim, Jim Carrey is returning to round up this trilogy. Not only will he be returning as Doctor Robotnik, he will be performing as Robotnik’s father, Gerald. Fans can look forward to watching Jim Carrey’s last performance on the big screen, as an actor who has been in over forty seven movies wouldn’t end his career with a mediocre performance.
Speaking of endings, the Sonic movie franchise will hardly be coming to a close once the trilogy is wrapped up, contrary to popular belief. As quoted during the Sonic Central Presentation (via ComicBook), producer Toby Ascher has claimed that, after Sonic 3, “[he doesn’t] see [the Sonic production team] slowing down at all,” seeing as “there’s such a rich universe of stories” yet to be told in this cinematic universe. Everything that made the first two Sonic movies enjoyable will be cranked up to eleven in this upcoming film. Fans of Sonic The Hedgehog absolutely cannot miss it.
