This year BHS Flutterflies Club will be hosting the St. Baldrick’s Event in the Lower gym on March 13th. 18 participants will be shaving their heads for childhood cancer. Donate here to support childhood cancer research.
The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is a non-profit organization, aiming to raise funds for finding a cure for childhood cancer. In 2014, Campbell Grace Hoyt, a lifelong Bernardsville Resident, passed away leaving a huge impact on the community. She inspired everyone who had the privilege of crossing her path and will continue to leave her mark in the future. This year’s St. Baldrick’s event will be running for the second year in a row, with last year being a huge success with the help of several students shaving their heads.
Andalora Parente made a huge effort to bring this foundation to Bernards High School, and remarks on her efforts to bring Flutterflies to BHS. “When my sister and I brought the Flutterflies club back to the school last year, we knew we wanted to do something big and make a school-wide event. I had heard about St Baldirkcs before and loved the idea and their foundation. I saw it as a great opportunity to get students involved and raise a lot of money and awareness.”
Her efforts have been impactful, encouraging students of all grade levels to participate. Last year on March 7th, the event raised over $23,000 for childhood cancer research. This year, there are almost double the participants with a plan to fundraise again for the cause.
“It was so cool to be part of the first installment of the tradition of St. Baldrick’s,” said Ari Rosen ‘25 who was one of the participants in last year’s event.
This year, there are a wide range of 18 participants who have volunteered to shave their heads. Last year, there were fewer participants, but many students joined in because of the impact it had last year. They have a number of student volunteers who are organizing the event. The Flutterflies club is run by English teacher, Mrs. O’Brien.
This year’s St. Baldrick’s event will raise money for childhood cancer and be a great way to spread awareness.
