Spirit club is a prospering new club that started in the 2014- 2015 school year that aims to carry out the school spirit that Bernard’s High has brought to different school events, led by Ms. Maestas who can be contacted to join. The main goal of the club is to promote school spirit by creating fun activities for students around the school. Spirit club is also trying to get to know the multiple disabilities students and get them involved in more school activities around the school, showing how Bernards High School wants everyone to feel at home and included during school events. Sophomore Katelin Brito said, “ I joined this club because I wanted to get more involved in school activities, and this club has really provided that for me.” Spirit club meets every Tuesday before or after school in room A-204 near the upper gym. The club meetings are at flexible times, which works for people who have after school activities and sports.
Spirit club not only spreads spirit around Bernards but also creates exciting activities to gather students and teachers. Although Spirit Club is a fairly new club of only two years now, there are many ideas generating. For example, every year at the Homecoming football game there is a spirit tent where you pay $5 for unlimited food and drink and free admission to the football game. This year the white- out Homecoming game was on October 30th against Somerville. The tent was a success and the club raised a total of $500. This money will help the club with upcoming events as a club including Special Olympics Field Day.
Spirit club wants to promote spirit and a family environment not only during the football season but all year round. The next upcoming event will be “ Who are you Thankful for Chocolate Lollipop”. Students will be able to purchase a lollipop during lunch for someone they are thankful for when Thanksgiving is near. Spirit club will deliver the lollipop to that student during homeroom before Thanksgiving break. The lollipops are handmade by Spirit Club members and multiple disability students as well.
The plans for the rest of the year are the Special Olympics in June as well as a volleyball fundraiser. The volleyball fundraiser will be a tournament that students can make their own teams and compete against each other for a prize. The volleyball game will be a fun after school event where all the students can come watch or participate. Ms. Maestas said, “ My expectations for the club is that the members of the club enjoy being a part of Spirit Club as well as having fun with all the activities”. Spirit Club is a fun and exciting club to get students together and promote spirit throughout Bernards High School.
