In the past weeks, Texans have been hit hard by a grueling winter storm. This unexpected natural disaster swept across the state resulting in a record-breaking amount of power-outages and lack of running water. Many people were forced to suffer in freezing temperatures.
Organizations across the nation as well as local businesses rushed to aid Texas during this horrific time.
Jim McIngvale, the owner of a local mattress store in Houston, stepped up to the plate to help hundreds of Texans. McIngvale transformed his expansive “Mattress Mack” into a shelter. He powered his store with a massive generator, and opened the doors to anyone and everyone. While abiding by COVID-19 guidelines, McIngvale handed out clothes, blankets, and an abundance of food and water. He paid for food vendors to bring in all sorts of meals to distribute, and freed his mattresses for anyone who needed a place to sleep.
McIngvale told the Washington Post, “When it comes down to it, Texans will step up and get through the storm together.”
During the storm, many companies rushed to donate money and resources to Texas. The news station, NBC5, reports a long list of generous companies. Some include Wells Fargo who donated a total of $500,000, Macy’s who donated $50,000 to local organizations, and Chobani who donated $100,000 and 100,000 cups of greek yogurt to food banks.
The aftermath of the storm did not go unnoticed. According to Kare.com, the Houston based nonprofit, West Street Recovery, worked to repair flooded homes. Additionally, Austin Mutual Aid worked to house people in hotels whose homes were destroyed, and Austin Street Center collected tons of blankets and warm clothing for people left homeless.
In the end, although Texas continues to fight the effects of the unprecedented storm, local and nation-wide helping hands continue to help the state return to normal.
