Bernards High’s fencing team has been crushing their competition so far. They’ve had matches against Homedell on December 16th, Watchung Hills on January 7, and Somerville on January 6. The girls fencing team won against all three, and the boys team won against Homedell and Somerville. Headed by Coach Cherng, the team was part of a SCIAA tournament on December 18, where Brianna Ho and Oliver Po won womens and mens county foils. They have upcoming matches against Vorhees, Chatham, and Morris Hills, coming up in mid January and Early February, as well as more in late February. The team’s matches with Hunterdon Central and North Hunterdon are both canceled due to recent COVID-19 case increases in both of the schools.
The team is excited to continue to move forward, hopefully with just as much success in the future. Brianna Ho, one of the BHS Fencing co-captains, says, “The season has been a great learning experience for us all, so far, including newcomers as well as previous members of the team. Since there were a lot of new freshmen that joined our team this year, the captains, including myself, needed to work together to teach and raise this gnu team. Although it’s been a lot of work, our new team members have learned so quickly and were able to adapt to the difficult and demanding practices.” She includes her enthusiasm about the team’s recent successes, and said, “Although we have only attended a few meets so far, our team has shown that we are able to compete with high-level teams as well as work together to fence our very best each time.”
