Harry Styles is starring in his second major motion picture, “My Policeman.” After the recent success of his movie “Don’t Worry Darling,” Styles is set to grace the screen once again in the new Amazon Prime film being released on October 21st. The film, based off of the best selling novel by Bethan Roberts, follows a queer policeman who law forbids to be gay. Tom Burgess, the main character played by Styles, is a star predominantly known for his success in music, and lives in a coastal English town where homosexuality is illegal.
Tom, a local policeman, finds himself in an illicit love triangle full of secrets that threaten to ruin all parties. As the movie starts, Tom finds himself engaged to a school teacher, Marion, played by Emma Corrin. While seemingly a whirlwind romance, this perfect relationship is quickly uncovered to be completely one sided. Tom is gay, a forbidden truth that could easily get him locked up if revealed. While portraying a facade of devotion to his fiance, Tom meets a male museum curator, Patrick (David Dawson) and quickly falls for him. This secret, if revealed, could leave the lives of three innocent people in ruins.
Debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival, “My Policeman” has so far received mixed reviews. Holding a 50% rating on Rotten Tomato, the film’s content and talent has frequently been questioned by viewers. One negative review claims the movie is not “nearly as candid, profound, or revelatory as it thinks it is.”
Styles’s performance has also been repeatedly critiqued. Best known for his talent and confidence in the musical realm of Hollywood, one review written by The Guardian states that “there’s a crucial dissonance between the confidence he exudes on stage and the awkwardness we see on screen.” Another claims that “there is too much of a visible process to his acting.” Clearly, many viewers believe Styles should stick to singing instead of venturing out into the critical world of acting.
Despite the many unenthusiastic critiques on the movie, “My Policeman” has also received its fair share of positive reviews. One article from Loud and Clear Reviews, describes the movie as “incredibly well written” and notes that Styles “was the perfect choice for this role.” Despite receiving mixed reviews, fans are excited to finally be able to watch the film. While Styles’ amount of talent has been rightfully questioned, his large fanbase is still eagerly anticipating the release of “My Policeman” on Prime. No matter the quality of the film, My Policeman will undoubtedly do well because of Harry’s cult-like following.
This does not seem to be the end of Style’s career in film. He is speculated to be featured in a new Marvel film, though fans are still waiting for more information. While controversial, Styles followers are eager to see what other endeavors he pursues, and “My Policeman” will not be the last of Harry Styles seen in Hollywood.
