Thanksgiving is a federal holiday that has been celebrated annually since 1870, this is when president Ulysses S. Grant signed the Holiday Act making Thanksgiving a national holiday. It is always celebrated in the U.S and Canada. Thanksgiving is always on the fourth thursday of november. It is known as a time to express gratitude.
It all started when the pilgrims came to Plymouth, America on a ship known as the mayflower. When teh pilgrims entered their new world, they had relatively no help and they were struggling. During the spring and summer they did their best to grow crops and survive. However, they struggled greatly during the winter time because the cold and snow reduced harvesting ability. The best time of year for the pilgrims was autumn. Autumn was the best time for crops and harvesting. Not only was autumn the best help for the pilgrims, but they also met new people during this time. They met the Wampanoag tribe and after some socializing, the two groups of people became friends. The trieb helped teach the pilgrims the proper and most efficient ways to farm. They taught them new techniques to help them perfect their craft of building things as well. The Wampanoag tribe also contributed to the big feast (Thanksgiving).
These pilgrims used their resources for many years and eventually had a big feast together to celebrate
how far they had come in their new land. They also celebrated and had the feast with their new companions, the Wampanoag tribe. The feast consisted of turkey, cranberries, potatoes, pumpkin pie, mashed potatoes. The Wampanoag tribe contributed fish, eels, shellfish, stews, vegetables, and beers.
The feast also happened because the pilgrims and the Wampanoags wanted a way to give their thanks to each other. This impacted how Thanksgiving is celebrated nowadays because most people before their meals say what and who they are thankful for.
