The World Cup, a soccer tournament that puts the best soccer teams in the world against each other for the world championship, is being held this year in Qatar. The tournament opened up on November 20, when Ecuador beat Qatar, with many teams being eliminated since then. The cup initially consisted of 32 teams which has recently been narrowed down to only 16, with many tough matchups to come.
There is one thing different about the World Cup this year that many people have been wondering about. If you are a big soccer fan you may be confused as to why the cup is being held in the winter, as commonly the tournament is held every four years during the month of July. Qatar was in charge of holding the tournament this year, but after intense investigation the FIFA, soccer’s world governing body came to the conclusion that the 120° temperatures would be unbearable to play in during these hot summer months. This is why the tournament ended up being moved to the colder winter months when the temperatures are much more withstandable and easier to play in.
The U.S managed to make it to the round of 16, after tying 0-0 against England, and 1-1 against whales.
Unfortunately, USA’s run at the 2022 world cup has come to an end after Netherlands defeated the U.S, 3-1. This was the first time the USA has participated in the world cup since 2014, as they did not qualify for the 2018 tournament, getting a lot of praise and support from fans around the world.
As far as predictions go, Brazil has maintained its spot as the favorite to win the 2022 world cup, with high hopes of France and Argentina going to the final rounds as well. If Brazil were to win the cup this year, it would represent their sixth world cup win in history.
