On December 16th at 11:30 a.m.Mr. Neigel came on the school loudspeaker. He told the school to evacuate. At first many students had no idea what was going on. “I was joking around at first but then I got serious when I saw the CERT team members,” said Anthony Fimognari, a junior. “I thought there was a bomb threat,” he said. Students across the building were stunned by the announcement to evacuate, “I thought it was a drill at first and then when they said to evacuate I wondered what was going on,” said Montana Sutton, a senior.
Students were directed to the bleachers on Olcott Field where they sat with their homerooms. In the stands rumours promulgated. “I was scared and I thought we were all going to die,” said Matt Taylor, a senior.
The whole incident took about an hour and a half. Students were first told to shelter in place and then to evacuate. After 40 or so minutes outside on the bleachers students were directed to the lower gym. After the school was searched and nothing suspicious was found, students were allowed to go back to class.
At a later date Mr. Neigel explained the event, “There was a suspicious note left which we were unsure about the meaning. We then took the necessary precautions to hold students in class and then evacuate the building while the police investigated the situation. Once the building was cleared by the police, students were returned to classes. There was never a specific threat against the school in any capacity and the note was a misunderstanding. We can never be too careful when it comes to student safety and I am relieved that no students were ever in danger at any point during the incident”.
