The vastly popular HBO program “Succession,” following the media conglomerate Roy family, will at last be returning for the fourth and final season on Sunday, March 26. With one episode airing each week, the final season will span ten hour-long episodes.
While fans were initially shocked and saddened by the news that the fourth season will conclude the popular series, it is an ultimately respectable decision. Too often it seems popular franchises will extend their runtime as long as they view it to be profitable, which ultimately compromises the integrity of the show as a whole, marring its previously well-adorned reputation.
Screenwriter and producer Jesse Armstrong’s choice to end the show ensures that “Succession” will evade this financial trap of drawing on past peak performance in both writing and acting, allowing the show to truly conclude in a manner that honors the legacy of the drama.
With the previous season three finale receiving an all time high viewership for the show of 1.7 million viewers the day of airing, it is clear that the show is far from losing public interest, making the conclusion all the more disappointing, but also entirely compelling.
“Succession” has stood out amongst competition for its artful approach to nuanced topics of family, extreme wealth, privilege, addiction, and mental health. It has managed a dynamic approach that captures audiences of all backgrounds, and has managed a mountainous feat- taking a cast assembled of almost entirely unlikable characters, and making the public care for them, even root for them.
One thing is for certain, the return of “Succession” is highly anticipated by the public, made all the more intriguing by the promise of an explosive conclusion.
