Marvel Studios and DC Comics have just released their movie plans into 2019, including two more Avengers movies and their first movie centered on a female superhero. Marvel plans to use Captain America: Civil War to launch the popular “Civil War” storyline and continue it in both upcoming Avengers movies. The storyline features Captain America and Iron Man going head to head when superheroes are required to register their powers with the federal government.
Sophomore Bea Thompson says “It’s going to be very sad, Captain America will probably die in Captain America: Civil War, but I’m excited to see Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans have an entire movie together without the other Avengers.” Guardians of the Galaxy 2 with the ever-popular Chris Pratt is another of the Marvel movies that will probably tie into the “Civil War” plot line or begin the “Infinity Gauntlet” storyline.
The Infinity Gauntlet was hinted at towards the end of the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie and will tie into Thanos’ role in the entire Marvel Universe. Also Chris Hemsworth, People’s Sexiest Man of the Year, will reprise his role as Thor in Thor: Ragnarok. Along with the returning characters, Marvel plans to introduce new ones including Captain Marvel, the first female superhero to have a full length movie. Bea Thompson says “Many fans are still awaiting the Black Widow movie, but Captain Marvel will do for now.”
The full lineup includes Captain America: Civil War, Doctor Strange, Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Thor: Ragnarok, Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War Part 1, Captain Marvel, Inhumans, and Avengers: Infinity War Part 2. Along with these movies, Marvel has the releases of Avengers: Age of Ultron and Antman in 2015. With the new Avengers movies, fans question whether the original Avengers will stay part of the franchise.
Bea Thompson says “Robert Downey Jr is an expensive actor to hire, so Iron Man will probably be leaving the franchise soon.”The departure of Iron Man and other Avengers seems more than likely with the addition of Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver to the Avengers in Age of Ultron. Netflix-exclusive television shows will be released aside from Agents of Shield and Agent Carter. This list includes Marvel’s Daredevil, AKA Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, Luke Cage, and The Defenders.
DC also released their movie plans into early 2020 featuring Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman, Justice League Part One, The Flash, Aquaman, Shazam, Justice League Part Two, Cyborg, and Green Lantern. Bea Thompson says “I’m definitely more skeptical of the new Green Lantern movie because the first Green Lantern movie wasn’t true to the comics.”
Along with this film schedule, DC has released The Flash, a TV series based on Barry Allen who is a forensic scientist with superhuman speed, Gotham, a pre-Batman Gotham City, and Constantine, that follows demon hunter John Constantine. Arrow, another DC show based on the Green Arrow comic hero, has just started its third season while CBS begins casting for a Supergirl series. These shows have had a strong start and show steady progression.
DC has announced that the TV universe will be separated and have no contribution to their massively expanding cinematic universe. In Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, Henry Cavill will reprise his role as Superman and Ben Affleck will make his debut as Batman, which caused an uproar among longtime fans.
Casting has begun for many of these movies including Gal Gadot from The Fast and Furious as Wonder Woman, Jason Momoa from Game of Thrones as Aquaman, and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as the villainous Black Adam for Shazam. These films will all come together in a unified Justice League movie. Additionally, Jared Leto, frontman of the band Thirty Seconds to Mars, and Will Smith have been confirmed as teammates in the upcoming Suicide Squad movie.
