After Saturday Night Live came to a halt due to the writers’ strike, fans thought the show would never return, but after signing a 3-year deal with a new company, Saturday Night Live is officially back and here to stay.
To kick off the new episode, long-time-running cast member Pete Davidson made a special appearance after stating he would not be returning after the Season 47 finale. And Ice Spice, the newest music sensation, came and performed two of her hit songs. Also returning to the show after the writers’ strike is the crew’s entire cast including James Austin Johnson, Sarah Sherman, and new cast member Chloe Troast, who joined the cast as a featured player.
The premier opened with Pete Davidson making a statement on the recent attack on Israel by Hamas. Davidson stated, “Who better to comment on it than Pete Davidson? Well in a lot of ways, I am a good person to talk about because when I was 7 years old my dad was killed in a terrorist attack.” Davidson also shared a memory from his childhood about a comedy his mom bought him by accident and how she noticed it was the only thing that made him laugh. He then pivoted it to talk about how comedy is one of the things that can get us through tragedies and shared how his heart is with everyone who is suffering in this recent attack.
Davidson then performed hilarious skits like Fox NFL Sunday, in which he talked about the Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift situation. A fan favorite skit was, “I’m Just Pete” which was a parody of one of Ryan Gosling’s songs on Barbie, “I’m Just Ken.” Ice Spice also took the stage, performing one of her hits, In Ha Mood. An Ice Spice fan, Julie Lund ‘26 says, “In Ha Mood is one of my favorite Ice Spice songs. I was also happy to see her on SNL and it was my favorite part of the whole episode.”
After Ice Spice performed “In Ha Mood,” Taylor Swift popped in to introduce Ice Spice. Ice Spice performed another song with Rema who is a Nigerian rapper and they sang a song called “Pretty Girl” together.
To finish the whole episode, Pete Davidson performed a skit about a drunken cowboy at a bar who used to work at a factory but now sells feet pics online. This was an entertaining way to end the episode and to leave the fans waiting for what else SNL has in store.
