Since the Performing Arts Center was constructed in 2008, the old auditorium located in the A wing has been used for minimal activities. Rarely an assembly would take place for individual grades due to the very limited attendant capacity. For example, elections for class officers. However, recent measures have been taken to utilize the vacant space. “The district is considering renovating the old auditorium and converting it into a student-centered media center” explained Principal Neigel. Although this project shows promising results, “[it] is in the very early planning stages, but students and staff have presented some great ideas for the architects to consider”.
“The proposed plan has areas for quiet study, small group work, classroom lessons, as well as personal or school computer use.” said Mr. Neigel. Essentially, the old auditorium could become similar to the school library. However, there are endless possibilities for the kind of activities that could take place. And ideas are still being developed.
Gauging the budget and costs would require a tremendous effort, let alone approval. Ultimately, the result relies on the school board administration’s consent. The proposition shows promising benefits. Some students here at BHS believe the thought of a work space flexible to the student agenda would prove beneficial. Junior Matt Cerza believes the new media center could “benefit the students because it allows an alternative to the library. It would probably allow eating food, more comfortable seating, better technology, etc”.
